In Memory of Frank Butson

In memory of a fellow birder and friend: Big Frank

I met Frank at Rosetta McClain Gardens located within the Scarborough Bluffs area of Toronto (formerly Scarborough prior to amalgamation).  He was a true birder at heart.  He had spent countless hours at Rosetta's recording Raptors as they passed during migration; see: http://raptorwatch.blogspot.ca/.  As people passed they noticed his presence and often asked what he was doing. He would  provide a quick explanation of his passion in a matter of fact and friendly manner.  Before long, a regular group of interested new birding hobbyists joined him.  Frank's passion for birding was infectious and many credit his friendly demeanor for their start in birding.

Rest in peace Big Frank!

Frank is/was the heart and soul of birding at Rosetta McClain Garden and beyond. Where some birding circles are divided into cliques, Rosetta welcomed all with open arms because of Frank. Our fathers were friends. We grew up on the same street but at different times. When I went back to care for my Dad during the latter stages of his life, Frank and I became friends, not on the basis of the street where we lived, but because of Rosetta. Frank went there to bird. I went there to find solace watching the water during times of stress with my Dad's health. We became friends. Frank, you are missed. Fly high; fly fast; fly free; and now, fly with the angels. If you see a very large Peregrine, say hello to Frank for me.

BigFrank was such an amazing guy with a great big heart and a passion for raptors few can dream to possess. I hope he is flying high amongst the 'grines now. Thank you for posting your beautiful tribute to him, Daniel.
